Now that the snowy season has begun and the wind is howling outside, it can be tempting to stay indoors with your favorite warm, delicious foods. This can be especially true during the holiday season, when stress levels often spike and eating a healthy diet can feel like a low priority. Tempting treats are everywhere. How can you cope?

As Oscar Wilde would say, “everything in moderation, including moderation.” During the holidays, this might be a sensible goal. It’s okay to have a little extra treat sometimes. Food is nourishing physically but it also brings us joy and connection. Most of the time we want to eat a healthy diet, but occasionally indulging in something less healthy can be important too.

The key is to be mindful in your eating. There are many ways to be mindful. Some people find that they graze throughout the day – a holiday cookie now, a few bites of lunch over the kitchen sink later, and a midnight snack before bed. The trouble with grazing is that it usually doesn’t feel satisfying. You’ve been eating quite a bit but your brain and body haven’t really registered it yet and so you just keep eating! To combat this, try these strategies:

  • Use a plate. Sit down at a table. Avoid eating at your desk if you can.
  • Try to eat without distractions – no screens, no scrolling. Tune in to your food.
  • Savor the textures and tastes of the food. Chew thoroughly.
  • Pause for sips of water. Put your utensil down sometimes. Make time for conversation if you’re eating with others.
  • Give yourself time to let the food settle a little before reaching for a second helping. If you let your body sense and process the food for a bit, you may not actually feel the need for more.

Eating in this way can help you avoid overeating and will hopefully make eating a more enjoyable experience.  Good luck, and happy holidays!
