What is Diabetes?

Diabetes Mellitus is a condition in which the pancreas does not make enough insulin, resulting in high blood sugar levels. The two most common types are type 1 and type 2.

Type 2 Diabetes

In type 2 diabetes (T2D), the pancreas is often still making insulin, but it may not be enough, or the insulin being made may not work well. Treatment includes lifestyle modifications such as healthy meal planning, regular exercise, oral medications, and sometimes insulin injections.

Type 1 Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease that destroys the beta cells in the pancreas where insulin is made. There is no way to prevent type 1 diabetes. People with T1D will always need to replace the insulin that their pancreas is not producing. Currently, there is no cure; however, technology to manage diabetes continues to improve.

Formerly referred to as "juvenile diabetes," people get diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at all ages.
