Exit Interviews

Exit Interviewing

PURPOSE

Exit interviews are considered voluntary. The interviews may provide insight into reasons for separation, as well as thoughts and recommendations for improving policies and practices. Employees who leave the University are given the opportunity to provide valuable perspectives on their overall working experience at the University.

PROCEDURE

An exit interview will be offered by the HR consultant to an employee leaving UMass Chan. All exit interviews are conducted by HR consultants and a Leaving the University Guide will be emailed to the exiting employee. The employee has the option to participate in the exit interview with a face-to-face meeting, phone call or a survey. 

CONFIDENTIALITY

Information shared by the departing employee will be kept confidential to the extent permitted by University policy and applicable law. The individual conducting the interview may be responsible for reporting certain information shared during the exit interview, including but not limited to, alleged violations of University policies. INTERVIEW NOTES

Notes taken by the HR Consultant are kept in an ‘exit interview only’ file, and not in the departing employee's personnel file. Such notes are stored in a secure manner.
