Letter from the Chair

Dear All,

Welcome to our slightly delayed February newsletter – after all, it’s a short month. On January 1, we welcomed new faculty to the department, as several members of the former Department of Cell and Developmental Biology became the core faculty for our newest Radiology Division – of Cell Biology and Imaging (CBI).  We have started working on ways in which the CBI division and the more traditional Radiology research areas can work together.  I’m excited about the potential synergy that these collaborations can facilitate. Mike King hosted a very successful research lunch last week, during which faculty presented 5-minute talks on their research. This exchange yielded several new potential areas for cooperation and development. Another area of collaboration, this one between UMMS and our Baystate campus is featured with Drs. DeBenedectis and Catanzano’s launch of the “UMMS –Baystate Women in Radiology Group”.

This month we also welcome Dr. Chris Cerniglia to his new role as Director of Undergraduate Medical Education. Over the next few months we will be featuring updates on Chris’ efforts to redesign how our Department interacts with medical students across all 4 years of their education.

Fulfilling our goal of the “Best place to give care and the best place to get care” I’m happy to congratulate Dr. Surapaneni for receiving an “Everyone is a Caregiver” award.
