Match Stats 2017
For the Class of 2017, 127 students went through the NRMP Main Match, for at least PGY1 spots. That is our largest class ever! Three of these students also matched in early specialty matches for ophthalmology.
There is a terrific diversity of fields in which UMass grads are entering. Twenty-seven of our students are entering internal medicine/primary care. Pediatrics placed second highest with 21 students entering that field. There are 18 students going in to family medicine. We have a record number of 8 students entering general surgery this year. True to our primary care mission, 51% of students are entering fields of primary care – 56% if you add OB. And we continue to have a terrific diversity of fields into which UMass grads are going, in addition to those already mentioned – Anesthesiology, Dermatology, Emergency Medicine, Neurology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Ophthalmology, Orthopedic Surgery, Otolaryngology, Pathology, Physical Medicine and Rehab, Plastic Surgery, Psychiatry, Radiology, and vascular surgery!
Those staying at UMass will have friends! Twenty-six students are staying with us for either PGY1 or PGY2 positions! Twenty-eight students will be just down the road in the Boston area and another 8 will be just south of us in Providence.
Fulfilling our commitment to train physicians for the Commonwealth, an important goal of our school – almost half of this year’s graduates (57 students) are doing at least a portion if not all of their training in MA and there is continuing diversity of places where UMass grads are known - all over NE/Atlantic states, west coast, the middle of the country, far West and the south.
We are so very proud of the Class of 2017! They have accomplished so much during their time here at UMass Chan Medical School and we are excited to see them enter their residencies as the next generation of outstanding leaders in health care.
