Fifth Year Option

Most students at the UMass Chan Medical School will complete their course of study in four years.  However, some students may wish to extend their academic program to pursue other optional opportunities.

Common reasons for application for entry into the Fifth Year Option:

  • International experiences and language immersion
  • Research experience
  • Additional clinical experiences

Students considering a Fifth Year Option (FYO) extension should begin the application process by meeting with thier Learning Communities Mentor and the Associate Dean for Student Affairs to discuss and develop a fifth year option plan.  Students must then complete the fifth year option application form.

The fifth year option is not intended for students who are required to extend thier program in order to complete courses required for the regular MD degree.

Please see the Medical School Student Handbook for the full Fifth Year Option Policy.
