Dangers of Nicotine - Presentation in Public Schools
For the second consecutive year, UMass Memorial Health radiologists presented at the Challenge and Reach Academy in Worcester about the dangers of vaping and nicotine use. This year Dr. Lacey McIntosh, Dr. Isha Gujrathi, and Dr. Daniel Ratanski's presentation covered the link between smoking and multiple cancers, the financial costs of tobacco products, and the harmful chemicals found in both combustible and non-combustible forms. Students also compared CT scans of healthy versus diseased lungs and participated in a lively discussion. One student asked whether taking vitamins could prevent lung disease while continuing to vape. Dr. Gujrathi responded, “There is no protection other than not doing it.”
Scott Moriarty, Alternative Education Director, praised the session, saying, “Really appreciate you doing this. You were able to captivate their attention. They were listening and taking it all in. We look forward to seeing you again.”
We are grateful for our ongoing partnership with Worcester Public Schools in advancing health education for local youth.
