Elisabeth Garwood, MD, Executive Clinical Vice Chair
We are delighted to announce the promotion of Elisabeth Garwood, MD, to the position of Executive Clinical Vice Chair of Radiology at UMass Memorial Health.
Dr. Garwood grew up in Central Massachusetts and brings an exceptional record of leadership, innovation, and dedication to her community and the Department of Radiology. Since joining UMass Memorial Radiology, Dr. Garwood has held numerous key roles, including Interim Chief of Radiology at UMass Memorial Health – Milford Regional Medical Center, Vice Chair for AI and Clinical Innovation, and Associate Division Chief for Musculoskeletal Radiology and Intervention. Dr. Garwood’s leadership in artificial intelligence has advanced the department’s reputation as a national leader in Radiology AI governance and quality assurance. Dr. Garwood will continue to serve as Associate Chief Medical Informatics Officer – AI for UMass Memorial Health. Recently, Dr. Garwood was promoted to Associate Professor of Radiology at UMass Chan Medical School.
A graduate of Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine, Dr. Garwood completed her Radiology residency training at University of California at San Francisco and a Musculoskeletal Radiology fellowship at New York University, where she also served as assistant professor. Her research portfolio includes peer-reviewed publications in musculoskeletal imaging, artificial intelligence in radiology, and health care equity. She recently published a book chapter in “AI Driven Innovations in Healthcare” and contributed to the authorship of “AI Assurance Standards Guide and Reporting Checklist” with the Coalition for Health AI, establishing national guidelines for responsible health AI use.
“Over the past 13 years that I have been at UMass Memorial, the size, scope and complexity of the Radiology
Department have increased greatly,” said Max Rosen, MD, Chair of Radiology. “Having Liz in the role of Executive
Clinical Vice Chair will help free-up some of my time to be able to focus on faculty mentoring, leadership
development, education, research and long-term strategic planning.
