Elective Description: Clinical exposure to patients with pulmonary, esophageal, pleural and mediastinal disease in both inpatient (tertiary-care academic medical center: inpatient ward / operating room / intensive care units) and outpatient settings (pre-operative and post-operative ambulatory clinics / multi-disciplinary clinics with medical and radiation oncology). Yes, there are direct patient care responsibilities as part of the surgical team. NIGHT / WEEKEND CALL - optional; recommend 1 night in 4 – NOT in-house call.

OBJECTIVES: Assessment (diagnostic workup) and treatment planning for thoracic diseases:
1. Lung cancer
2. Esophageal cancer
3. Benign esophageal disease – strictures, reflux, etc.
4. Pleural disease – benign & malignant
5. Chest wall lesions – benign & malignant
6. Mediastinal masses

Assisting / observing in operating rooms for minor and major surgical cases; development of basic surgical skills.
