Elective Description: 

After the completion of this 4 week elective the student will:
  1. gain understanding of disease that affects the small intestine, colon, rectum and anus. Specifically Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s Disease), Diverticular Disease, Malignancy, Functional Bowel Disorders and Proctologic Conditions will all be thoroughly covered.
  2. learn the important aspects of the medical history and the proper examination including the anorectal exam as it pertains to diseases of the lower gastrointestinal tract.
  3. know which diagnostic tools are utilized, their indications and contra-indications. Specific procedures include Anoscopy, Proctoscopy, Colonoscopy, Anorectal Ultrasound, Anal Manometry, Defecography. In addition, radiographic interpretation of CT Scan, GI contrast studies, PET Scan, and MRI as they relate to Lower GI Disease will be covered.
  4. be directly involved with the operative management and post-operative care of those conditions so treated.
