Elective Description:  This sub-internship is an introduction to a career in surgery for students interested in both pediatric and general surgery. Students are expected to perform as supervised interns while on service. To that end, each sub-intern will be expected to follow a maximum of 3 patients each day. The student will be responsible for pre-rounding on these patients, for knowing the results of their studies and any consults performed in their care, for presenting the patients during rounds, for devising a plan with the guidance of residents and attendings, for writing daily notes and supervised orders for the patients, and for following the clinical course of their assigned patients. Sub-interns should expect to work closely with the service intern in learning to perform these tasks. They should also shadow the senior resident on service when new consults arise, and should be present in the operating room for all procedures pertaining to their assigned patients.

The sub-intern is also responsible for delivering a 45-60 minute talk before the completion of their rotation on a well-researched topic pertinent to pediatric surgery. Past topics include the use of vena cava filters in patients with spinal cord injury, sacrococcygeal teratoma, and splenic trauma.
