Elective Description:

This elective gives students an opportunity to study and understand diseases of the digestive tract in children. There is exposure to inpatient and outpatient gastrointestinal and nutrition disease infants, children and adolescents. There is opportunity for daily participation in the diagnostic work-up and treatment plans for common and rare pediatric gastrointestinal illnesses. The student will also be able to participate in common gastrointestinal procedures such as upper endoscopy, colonoscopy, and other procedures. The student will have the chance to learn how to change gastrostomy tubes and place nasogastric tubes in a hands-on session. The student will be encouraged to prepare an informal presentation on a topic of their choice at the end of the elective.
