Elective goal: to expose senior medical students to disorders of the female pelvic floor including urinary incontinence, uterovaginal prolapse and defecatory dysfunction Description: This rotation is primarily an outpatient experience with some exposure to the operating room and postoperative care. The bulk of the student’s time will be spent in clinic seeing patients alongside the Urogyn faculty, fellows and residents. Students will see a wide variety of patients with complex pelvic floor disorders. The majority of patients will have prolapse and/or urinary incontinence but we also regularly see genital fistulas, pelvic pain, fecal incontinence as well as complications from prior surgical repairs. Our service routinely performs office procedures such as urodynamic studies and office cystoscopy and students will be exposed to these techniques as they occur during the rotation. On average, students will be in the operating room 1 day per week assisting with surgical repairs. Students will follow patients postoperatively until discharge. The student will also participate in the weekly Urogyn fellowship didactic sessions on Friday afternoons. Objectives: at the end of this rotation students should be able to: Obtain a comprehensive history of patients presenting with symptoms of prolapse and incontinence and be able to present completely and concisely to the attending physician Describe the appropriate physical examination and laboratory and procedural evaluation of patients with stress urinary incontinence, urge urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. Describe the pathophysiology or and risk factors for prolapse and stress incontinence. Formulate and describe appropriate treatments for patients with stress urinary incontinence, urge urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. Student responsibilities: Be present and on time for all clinical and teaching assignments. Attend grand rounds and Friday afternoon Urogyn didactics. Round on patients and assist with patient care as requested by the Urogyn attending. Write a 2-3 page paper and give a 10-15 min presentation to the division at the end of the rotation on a topic related to Urogynecology of the student’s choice. The topic should be selected with the guidance of the Urogyn faculty and ideally this would be selected based on an interesting patient seen during the rotation. Student evaluation: Students will be evaluated using the Umass (or student’s home institutional) student evaluation form. Evaluations will be based on the student’s performance on the above objectives in clinic and on the written and oral presentation at the end of the rotation.
