Prerequisites: 4th year medical student
Elective Description: The student will select a single Attending surgeon to work with in a specific specialty. The student will accompany the Attending in clinic, as well as during in-patient care. The elective is continuum of the third year clerkship with increased responsibility in preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative surgical care. The student may participate in on-going house-staff activities including admission work-ups, night call, emergency and operating experience. Responsibilities of the student will be assigned by the Attending. These would involve doing histories and physicals on patients and under supervision, ordering specific investigations and participating in the patient’s total care. The student will get a broad exposure to procedures in that specialty. The student will be encouraged to prepare at least one presentation during the rotation. Evaluation will be done by the Attending surgeon and by residents rotating on that Attending’s team if appropriate. The student will be encouraged to function at the level of an intern.
