GEST Embolization Symposium

Three UMMS Radiology Residents, Daniel Alvarez Valero, MDRoberto Kutcher-Diaz, MD, and Venkatesh Murugan, MBBS recently presented cases in a competition at GEST (Global Embolization Oncology Symposium Technologies) meeting in New York, NY. The GEST Trainee case competition is open to all medical students, residents, and fellows. The cases will be posted online to the GEST website/social media with the top 15 cases were presented live at the annual meeting in New York City on May 9-12, 2019. Awards were given to the top three cases presented at the meeting with the winner presenting their case during the Sunday afternoon Plenary session. Dr. Kutcher-Diaz's talk titled Embolization of Traumatic Abdominal Aortic Psuedoaneurysms won one of the awards.

Daniel Alvarez Valero's talk was titled Percutaneous Transgluteal Embolization of Internal Iliac Artery Aneurysm and Venkatesh Murugan's talk was Percutaneous Extra-anatomic Biliary Bypass.

Both Drs. Murugan and Kutcher-Diaz reported their presentations were well received. Drs. Rosen, Wicky van Doyer and Malik helped to critique and coach the three residents before their presentations. "We wanted to thank you for helping us prepare.  Almost every question posed after the presentations was anticipated during our critique here" said Roberto Kutcher-Diaz.

"I think it was a great first experience and I was surprised by the support from the department. We even had an internal meeting with Dr. Rosen, Dr. Wicky, and Dr. Malik to evaluate and practice the presentations. The event itself was really big with physicians visiting from all around the world, and industry representatives in every corner. It was indeed a competition and Roberto won an award! Unfortunately awards were given Saturday morning and he had to work here so he was not there to get it."  Daniel Alvarez Valero.
