Douglas Ziedonis, MD, MPH
Douglas M. Ziedonis, MD, MPH, is Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychiatry at the UMass Chan Medical School and UMass Memorial Medical Center. Dr. Ziedonis is an internationally recognized leader in co-occurring mental illness and addiction, in particular tobacco dependence. He is the recipient of numerous awards and grants from the NIMH, NIDA, CSAT, Foundations, and other agencies, including current and recent NIDA grants on Addressing Tobacco through Organizational Change in Addiction Settings, Motivational Enhancement Therapy for Poly-Drug Addiction, and Smoking Cessation Treatments for Individuals with Schizophrenia. While at UCLA, Yale University, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, and UMass he has been a very effective mentor of faculty and staff, including developing “training the mentor” programs. He has been the primary mentor for over 10 individuals with Career Development Awards and these individuals all have active academic careers at this time. In 2006 he received the Norman H. Edelman Clinical Science Mentoring Award, and he has been active in national American Psychiatric Association mentoring programs for psychiatrists. He has served as an advisor to President Bush’s New Freedom Commission on Mental Health and serves as a Senior Fellow for SAMHSA’s Co-Occurring Disorders Center for Excellence and the TIPS on Co-Occurring Disorders. He has served on the American Psychiatric Association’s Practice Guidelines Work Group on Substance Used Disorders and Council on Addictions. Most recently, Dr. Ziedonis served on the Governor’s Heroin and Oxycontin Commission. Dr. Ziedonis has a professional commitment to the improvement of the quality of life and the promotion of recovery of people with or at risk of mental and addictive disorders.
