Core Seminar in Addiction Psychiatry

This weekly seminar covers a broad range of topics in addiction psychiatry, including core basics in assessment, treatment planning, management, and treatment. Sessions included basic science, pharmacology, pathophysiology, medication management, assessment and treatment planning, therapies and therapeutic techniques, epidemiology, genetics, all substances and all Levels of Care, consultation-liaison, administrative issues, and problems of special populations – co-occurring psychiatric disorders, co-occurring medical disorders, minorities, women, pregnant addict, families, adolescents, elderly, etc.

From Basic Research to Evidenced - Based Clinical Practice Seminar (Journal Club)

This seminar provides fellows an opportunity to in-depth review with basic and clinical research faculty clinical cases of particular interest to fellows, and to improve on skills of locating, reviewing, critically analyzing and assimilating relevant scientific evidence related to the care of patients. It will also allow the fellow to become familiar with the major medical journals and professional-scientific organizations dealing with research on the understanding and treatment of substance-related disorders. Psychiatry residents are encouraged to attend and faculty is invited.

Departmental Grand Rounds

Formal presentations on a variety of topics sponsored by each departmental division. Formats include “updates” on clinical issues, research presentations, and panel discussions.

Departmental Case Conference

Clinical case conferences sponsored by each departmental division, including fellow case presentation, discussion by faculty or invited discussant with input from audience, and review of relevant literature.

Clinical Neuroscience Course

Sheldon Benjamin, MD (Director)

Structured review of all clinical neuroscience for psychiatrists—including basic neurophysiology, neuroimaging, detailed cognitive status assessment, and all major neurologic syndromes. Elective for Substance Abuse Fellows.

Consultation-Liaison/Emergency Psychiatry Case Conference

Case conference utilizing fellow presentation of cases evaluated on the Emergency Mental Health and Psychiatry Consultation-Liaison services as jumping off point for faculty discussion of a planned list of topics considered the core knowledge base of consultation and emergency psychiatry. Alternates with the Inpatient Case Conference in same time slot.
