Clinical Services - UMass Memorial Health Care

At our hospitals and other medical facilities, we provide care to the large majority of people in this region. Here are a few statistics for 2009:

  • Discharges: 58,994, excluding newborns
  • Ambulatory visits: 1,335,391
  • Emergency visits: 264,487
  • Inpatient/Outpatient surgeries: 40,688
  • Inpatient/Outpatient outreach lab tests: 18,200,000

We also had many accomplishments across our system. Here are just a few examples:

  • Successful Joint Commission surveys at the Medical Center, Clinton Hospital, Marlborough Hospital and Fairlawn Rehabilitation Hospital
  • Partnership brings Heart and Vascular Center of Excellence doctors to Clinton Hospital
  • Medical Group receives Healthgrades Excellence Awards for four areas of care
  • Medical Center named number one in New England for surviving a heart attack for the second consecutive year
  • New physicians and digital mammography now at Barre Family Health Center
  • Lab outreach business grows by more than 50 percent
  • A new Center for Geriatric Psychiatry opens at Wing Memorial Hospital
  • Marlborough Hospital enters into significant agreement with Southboro Medical Group
  • Computerized physician order entry (CPOE) launches at HealthAlliance Hospital with more than 35 percent of physician orders now done electronically

Our financial performance in fiscal year 2009 was strong, allowing us to carefully reinvest in UMass Memorial to provide excellent care to members of all of our communities:

  • Our year-end operating margin for all our hospitals and other entities was $83 million.
  • Our total margin including investment income was $92 million. Both these margins include supplemental Medicaid funding provided to us by the Commonwealth in recognition of the extent of our care for the uninsured and Medicaid patients.
  • We provided $60 million in care to patients without insurance.
