Faculty at the University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS) are appointed in a department within the School of Medicine (SOM) or in the Graduate School of Nursing (GSN), which does not have departments.

The type of appointment is determined by the Department Chair (SOM) or Dean (GSN) on initial appointment and is confirmed in the letter of appointment.
Employed Faculty are assigned a temporary appointment (APP, Section 3.12.a) at the rank and title proposed by their chair or dean until their appointment is approved through the process described below. Approval of temporary appointments should be completed within one year. Other Faculty Appointments (Professional Staff; Affiliate, Adjunct and Visiting Faculty) are effective when the appointment is approved.
