Affiliate Faculty

(See APP, Section 6.3)

Individuals who are not employed by UMass Chan Medical School, UMMHC, or a University-approved external foundation or agency and who are not eligible for appointment as Adjunct or Visiting Faculty may be appointed as Affiliate Faculty based on their expected contributions to UMass Chan Medical School educational and research programs.

This category includes, but is not limited to, Courtesy Staff appointed to UMMMC; individuals at UMass Chan Medical School regional campuses (such as Umass Chan-Baystate); members of the medical, nursing or other health professions at affiliated hospitals, other health care facilities or in private practice; individuals based at research institutions, and retired UMass Chan Medical School Faculty who are actively engaged in UMass Chan Medical School educational and research programs.

Note: Affiliate Faculty were categorized as “Voluntary” Faculty under the previous APP.

Appointment

Individuals are appointed to a one-year term on recommendation by the chair or Tan Chingfen Graduate School of Nursing Dean (as applicable) and approval through the procedures for appointment and promotion. Individuals may be appointed or promoted to the ranks of Instructor, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor, according to the eligibility and criteria for these ranks.

Reappointment

Individuals may be reappointed annually on review and recommendation by the chair or Tan Chingfen Graduate School of Nursing Dean and approval by the T.H. Chan School of Medicine Dean (if applicable) and Provost or their designee.

Resignation

Individuals may resign their faculty appointment on prior written notification to the chair or Tan Chingfen Graduate School of Nursing Dean (as applicable) at the earliest possible opportunity, but at least 90 days prior to the effective date of resignation.

Termination

The appointment of an Affiliate Faculty member may be terminated at any time by the chair, T.H. Chan School of Medicine Dean, or Tan Chingfen Graduate School of Nursing Dean (as applicable) on prior written notification to the individual at least 30 days in advance of termination of appointment.

Contingency of UMass Chan Faculty Appointment

The appointment of an Affiliate Faculty member who is employed by an affiliated organization is contingent on continued employment of the individual by the affiliated organization and the affiliation agreement with that organization. In the event that either or both of these conditions are no longer in effect, the Faculty appointment will end coterminously.
