Thesis: Modulating the Activity and Metabolism of Small Interfering RNA Through 5′-Terminal Guide Strand Modification: Chemical Diversification, Pharmacological Evaluation, and Mechanistic Characterization of Novel 5′-Phosphate Mimics

Hailing from Charleston, South Carolina, Theodore “Ted” Carrigan-Broda began his scientific career with a BS in biochemistry & chemistry at the College of Charleston, including a thesis characterizing novel organosilicon compounds. Ted subsequently worked as a substitute teacher, EMT, and part-time chemistry lab tech at the Medical University of South Carolina before joining the MD-PhD training program at UMass Chan in 2019. As a graduate student in the Yamada and Khvorova labs, Ted researches the design, synthesis, and characterization of modified siRNA architecture for optimized protein interactions, metabolic stability, distribution, and potency. When not engaged in research or clinical activities, Ted enjoys photography, international travel, hiking, skiing, cooking, baking, graphic design, calligraphy, canoeing, home-brewing & mixology, leech husbandry, and memes/dad jokes.
