Vista Retests and Withdrawal
- WIN week: Focused retests
- Fail a block on Monday of the assessment week → focused retest on Friday of the assessment week (for eligible students)
- Eligibility
- Block grade is within 2 standard deviations of the mean (SDM), AND
- Score on the block final exam is within 2 SDM, AND
- Score on the NBME exam is within 2 SDM
If a student doesn’t meet these eligibility criteria, they will be offered a full retest over summer (for 1st year blocks)/prior to taking step 1, as determined between the school and student (for 2nd year blocks)

- Failing focused retests
- Fail up to 2 focused retests, progress with ‘INCOMPLETE’ grades for each of the blocks and are offered full retests for 2 blocks over summer (for 1st year blocks)/prior to step-1, as determined between the school and student (for 2nd year blocks)
- Mandatory success plan implemented following 2nd failed focused retest
- This includes requirement to meet with CAA and mentors
- Fail 3 focused retests during the first (P1 through GI) or second (CVS through endocrine/reproductive) years → PAUSE
- ‘INCOMPLETE’ grades for all 3 blocks
- Remediate the following year
- Deceleration plan determined by CAA and/or AEB
- Fail up to 2 focused retests, progress with ‘INCOMPLETE’ grades for each of the blocks and are offered full retests for 2 blocks over summer (for 1st year blocks)/prior to step-1, as determined between the school and student (for 2nd year blocks)
- Withdrawal from block in the WIN week
- Students may request withdrawal from a block up to 5pm the day prior to the focused retest
- Failing focused retests
- Block Credit: Full retests
- Fail focused retest on Friday of the assessment week → allowed to progress with INCOMPLETE grade → full retest over summer (for 1st year blocks) or before taking step 1/entering clerkship, as determined between the school and the student (for 2nd year blocks)
- Fail full retest of a block, obtain an NCR grade
- Remediate the following year
- Deceleration plan determined by CAA and/or AEB
- Full retests should only include in-house exams (no NBMEs)
- Students may request withdrawal from a block up to 48 hours prior to the full retest
