Informatics

The UMCCTS Informatics Core is comprised of the Clinical Research Informatics Core and the Bioinformatics Core, both of which work closely with the Research Computing Services of the UMass Medical School Information Technology.  Directed by faculty informatics leaders, the Cores innovate, develop new tools, provide consultations to investigators, share resources with the national CTSA community, and teach in our educational programs.  Research Computing integrates with the clinical system, supports data management and informatics tools, serves as the access hub for services, storage, and high-performance computing, and conducts training in information technology (IT) security and use of common tools.

The Clinical Research Informatics Core is managed by the Division of Health Informatics and Implementation Science in the Department of Quantitative Health Sciences.

Bioinformatics Core

The Bioinformatics Core designs best of breed data processing pipelines for a variety of data types, particularly sequencing technologies (including RNA-Sequencing and ChIP-Seq).  Pipelines designed and tested by laboratories in cooperation with the Core are immediately made available to the larger community through our workflow engine.

Biomedical Research Informatics Consulting and Knowledge Service (BRICKS)

In coordination with the Medical School's Research Computing Services (RCS), BRICKS provides expertise and computational resources to the University.  BRICKS consults with investigators to support data access, integration, research planning, and provides knowledge to institutional leaders.  For more information, please contact Ariana Kamberi, Research Coordinator, at Ariana.Kamberi@umassmed.edu or 508-856-8945.

Biomedical Research Development Group (BRIDG)

The BRIDG Core supports human capital-programmers and data managers with unique expertise in informatics standards, data mining, machine learning, and interface-centric middleware programming.  BRIDG is in response to unmet translational research needs-to effectively extract data from both coded and free text systems deployed by UMMHC clinical information systems, to assure standards and develop middleware for legacy databases, and to create plug-ins to the UMMHC Information Systems to allow further data acquisition and data representation.  For more information, please contact Ariana Kamberi, Research Coordinator, at Ariana.Kamberi@umassmed.edu or 508-856-8945.

Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center (MGHPCC)

The Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center provides state-of-the-art infrastructure for computationally intensive research that is indispensable in the increasingly sensor and data-rich environments of modern science and engineering.

Massachusetts Integrated Clinical Academic Research Database (MiCARD)

MiCARD is the UMass implementation of the i2b2 informatics platform for clinical research. MiCARD helps researchers overcome one of the greatest problems in population-based research: rapidly compile large groups of well-characterized patients.  Qualified investigators may use the MiCARD web-based query tool to determine the aggregate total number of patients at participating UMMHC hospitals who meet a given set of inclusion and exclusion criteria (currently demographics, diagnoses, medications, and laboratory values).  Because counts are aggregate, patient privacy is protected.

REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture)

REDCap is a secure web application for building and managing online surveys and databases available to UMass investigators.  UMMS is a member of the REDCap Consortium.
