The overarching goal of our research is to investigate programmed cell death (apoptosis) and the consequences of apoptosis in the context of multicellular organisms. In particular, we are focusing on understanding the genetic control of apoptosis (cell death), the integration of apoptosis in developing organisms (cell competition) and the influences of apoptotic cells on the behavior of neighboring surviving cells (compensatory proliferation). We are taking advantage of the unique genetic properties of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. Defects in the regulation of these processes contribute to the pathogenesis of multiple diseases including cancer, autoimmunity and neurodegeneration.
A rotation in the lab will provide a detailed introduction into modern Drosophila experimentation with emphasis on visualizing gene activity and cell death in wild-type and various mutant backgrounds, phenotypic analysis, generating transgenic flies and small scale genetic screens. In addition, students will gain experience in basic molecular biology and protein chemistry. The experiments will be aided by state-of-the-art facilities. Projects to be determined by interest.
