Meet Our Residents

Chief Residents 2023-2024

Name: Sarah Reid, MD
Medical School: University of Connecticut
About Me: I grew up on Long Island in a small town just a few minutes outside of NYC and a few minutes from the beach. I went to the University of Connecticut for college (go Huskies!) and studied both psychology and physiology/neurobiology. I continued at UConn for medical school and graduated in 2020 at the height of the global pandemic. Matching to UMass was truly one of the best things that has ever happened to me! I have made amazing friends here and have really felt at home in the central Massachusetts area. In my free time, I am usually checking out an area restaurant/brewery, walking my dog around Lake Chauncy, or attending a game/concert/comedy show, etc. I'm excited for my year as a chief resident because I want to give back to a program that has given me so much. After next year, I am hoping to pursue a fellowship in pulmonary & critical care medicine.

Name: Stephanie LaFollette, MD
Medical School: Tufts
About Me: I grew up in Southington, CT, a suburb in the middle of the state. I went to College of the Holy Cross right here in Worcester where I majored in biology and worked in a stem cell lab. I took one year off and then went to Tufts for medical school. Like all my co-chiefs, I graduated in 2020 during the height of the pandemic. In fact, it was the week that I matched into my top residency choice when all the students were sent home to quarantine. I'm interested in a career in Infectious Disease after completing residency. In my downtime, I love to cook (mostly Korean and Italian food), go out to restaurants around Worcester and Boston, crochet, and take care of my fish tanks.

Name: Alessandro Colletta, MD
Medical School: BMC
About Me: I am originally from San Maurizio D'Opaglio, a small town in Northern Italy by Lake Orta, and near the border of Switzerland. I came to the US as a foreign exchange student in high school and fell in love with the country so much that I decided to stay. I went to college at the University of Michigan where I majored in Microbiology and truly loved going to The Big House for Michigan football games. I took four years off prior to med school which I spent by first doing research in Analytical Chemistry in Ann Arbor and later taking a master’s in medical science in Boston. I ultimately went to BU for medical school and graduated in 2020 in the midst of the pandemic like all my co-chiefs. I love my residency program here and developed a strong interest in Hepatology. As for my hobbies, I enjoy sailing, horseback riding, and running outdoors. I am a big soccer aficionado and passionately follow all the major leagues in Europe. I also love cooking (particularly Italian cuisine), salsa dancing, reading poetry, and philosophy.

Name: George Ciociolo, MD
Medical School: UMass Chan Medical School
About me: I was born at UMass Memorial and spent my childhood nearby in Holden, MA. I remained in Worcester for college, attending College of the Holy Cross. After college, I lived in Boston for three years, doing clinical and quality improvement research at Brigham and Women's Hospital. I couldn't get enough of Worcester and returned to the city for medical school at UMass. I grew to love the atmosphere and collegial teaching environment at UMass Chan and couldn't have imagined attending residency anywhere else. After my chief resident year, I plan on pursuing a career in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. I currently live nearby in Northborough with my wife, 3-year-old daughter, and Boston terrier named Brady. My hobbies include cooking, golf, cars, fitness, landscaping, and spending time with my family. I am also slightly obsessed with all Boston sports teams.

Name: Jason Yang, MD, PhD
Medical School: UMass Chan Medical School
About me: I was born in China and moved to the US in middle school. I spent the next few years growing up in a couple of suburbs outside of Boston before attending Cornell University. There, I developed an interest in research and medicine that eventually led me to enroll in the MD/PhD program at UMass Chan. The best part about doing my residency here has been the supportive environment created and maintained by the administrative staff, the faculty, and our co-residents. As we expand our program, I’m excited to be part of a team that will continue to build on this environment and culture to help our peers succeed. During the last three years, I have enjoyed learning about autoimmune diseases and hope to pursue Rheumatology in the future. Outside of medicine, I like playing basketball, hiking, partaking in food-related activities (mostly eating but some cooking as well), hanging out with my wife, and attempting to prevent my toddler from faceplanting every few seconds.
