UMass Chan US News and World Report Best Grad Schools Medical Primary Care 2024

Welcome to the Primary Care Residency Track at UMass Chan!

UMass Chan Medical School is consistently ranked by U.S. News and World Report as one of the nation’s best Primary Care medical schools. We are excited to extend that level of excellence to residency training as well!

We are a track in the well-established UMass Chan Internal Medicine Residency program, known for its comprehensive clinical training in a supportive and diverse educational environment.

Our Primary Care Track has a separate program director, schedule, curriculum, core faculty, and NRMP Match Number. Our track was developed with the full and enthusiastic support of UMass Chan, the Office of Graduate Medical Education, the Department of Medicine, and the UMass Memorial Health clinical system, and has generated significant community engagement and collaboration. Our novel program emphasizes national educational best practices, balances educational and clinical service needs, and is innovative in its delivery of curriculum and clinical experiences. With our 3+2 schedule and additional ambulatory clinical rotations, we offer far more ambulatory training than one would find in traditional categorical internal medicine programs. We also ensure ample training in the inpatient and critical care settings, as well as in medical subspecialties, to create well-rounded general internists. Our top-notch team of passionate, established, and caring medical educators provides ample personalized mentoring to support each resident with their individual career goals. Our graduates are well-prepared for many different career paths.

We are looking for smart, motivated, empathic, diverse, and collaborative learners to join us! We hope you find our program has what you are looking for in the next step in your medical training.

Thank you for your interest in our residency program. For the 2024-2025 residency application cycle, our program will be participating in the Internal Medicine tiered signaling program.

  • We will utilize both Gold and Silver signals to help prioritize the order of our holistic review of the many outstanding applications we receive. Gold signals will be reviewed first, followed by Silver signals.
  • Sending us a signal does not guarantee an interview with our program.
  • While we preferentially review applications from those who signal our program, we also consider applicants who do not signal us, particularly those who have indicated a geographic preference for the New England area.
  • We encourage all students to signal us if interested in our program, this includes students who may have done visiting rotations with us, as well as our own UMass Chan medical students.
  • Program signals cannot be sent to specific tracks. If an applicant is applying to our Primary Care Track and our Categorical Track, we will similarly utilize the signals for both applications.
  • As recommended by AAIM, we will not use signals for rank list decision-making.
