Medical Education Scholarship
What is medical education scholarship? Educational scholarship refers to any material, product or resource originally developed to fulfill a specific educational purpose that has been successfully peer-reviewed and is subsequently made public through appropriate dissemination for use by others.
The concept of medical education scholarship has evolved over the years. In 1990, the Boyer Report for the Carnegie Foundation listed 4 types of scholarship:
- discovery -- uses the scientific method to investigate phenomena
- integration -- interprets the use of knowledge across disciplines
- application -- uses the educator's findings to aid society
- teaching -- studies teaching methods to optimize learning
The 5 categories included in medical education scholarship are teaching, curriculum development, advising and mentoring, leadership and administration, and learner assessment.
In 2000, Glassick defined how to measure the quality of scholarship as:
- Clear goals
- Adequate prepartion
- Appropriate methods
- Significant results
- Effective presentation
- Reflective critique
How do you do medical education scholarship?
- Clearly describe the educational activity and your hypothesis
- Collect data to support your hypothesis
- Share your findings with the educational community to improve learnin
- Refer to the section on writing and submitting medical education research
