Tony Nunes, PhD

Dr. Nunes is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Epidemiology in the Department of Population and Quantitative Health Sciences. He is a pharmacoepidemiologist with research interests in drug safety, utilization, and comparative effectiveness. Through his work in these areas, Dr. Nunes has conducted studies in large nationally represented databases of medical claims and electronic medical records. Dr. Nunes has applied machine learning techniques, including natural language processing, to advance the utility of administrative data resources in epidemiological research. His research has supported regulatory commitments instituted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the European Medical Association. Methodologically, Dr Nunes is interested in expanding the application of machine learning techniques for the purposes of data processing and analysis. He is applying these methods to better characterize measures of disease occurrence and to identify biases in medical record documentation practices. As an educator, Dr. Nunes teaches in the core epidemiologic methods courses, mentors doctoral students, and is leading the efforts to incorporate methods such as NLP and machine learning into the core curriculum.
