Matthew Harkey, PhD, ATC

Matt Harkey is an assistant professor in the Department of Kinesiology at Michigan State University. Harkey is a musculoskeletal researcher whose goal is to identify people at increased risk for knee osteoarthritis to better target interventions that prevent the onset or progression of disability. His research uses an interdisciplinary approach to understand early osteoarthritis using techniques from biomechanics, biochemistry, structural imaging and epidemiology. His primary research interest is understanding how osteoarthritis develops following anterior cruciate ligament injuries, and how this is related to the way people move. Additionally, he uses large epidemiological cohorts of people with or at risk for knee osteoarthritis to monitor changes in joint health that occur prior to disease onset.
