Topic: Using Drug Treatment Courts to Manage Substance Use Disorders 

Dr. Ekaterina (Kate) Pivovarova is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the Systems and Psychosocial Advances Research Center (SPARC) at the UMass Chan Medical School and a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in work with forensic populations. Dr. Pivovarova’s research examines two areas:1) Treatment of substance use disorders using court mandated programs for individuals involved with the criminal justice system and 2) bioethics of research, including examining approaches to conducting multi-site research through the use of single IRBs.

The objectives of this podcast:

  • to develop an understanding about the importance of addressing substance use disorders in criminal justice populations,
  • exploring the efficacy of drug treatment courts and ways of improving retention in existing programs, and
  • understanding the relationship between comorbid medical conditions, addiction, and quality of life in criminal justice populations.
