Samir Malkani, Asem Ali, and John Mordes Study Accuracy of a Continuous Glucose Monitor in Intensive Care Units
Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices are routinely used in the outpatient management of diabetes; however, they are not yet approved for use in intensive care units.
In a recent study, Samir Malkani, MD, clinical chief and professor of medicine, Asem Ali, MD, adjunct assistant professor of medicine, and John Mordes, MD, professor emeritus, all from the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism, explored the accuracy of using continuous glucose monitors in the intensive care unit (ICUs). The goal of the study was to determine the accuracy of CGM glucose determinations made in an ICU by comparing them with standard glucose measurements obtained during routine care. The team additionally worked to determine the frequency of device malfunctions or adverse events and to assess acceptance of CGM use by caregivers.
