Welcome Matthew Petersile, MD, to Gastroenterology!

Dr. Petersile earned his MD from Boston University School of Medicine, in Boston, MA, and completed his residency at Boston University Medical Center, in Boston, MA. He completed his fellowship in Gastroenterology at UMass Memorial Medical Center, where he also served as a chief fellow from 2021-2022. 

In his new role at UMass, Dr. Petersile will see patients on the University, Memorial, and Southborough campuses. Please join us in welcoming Dr. Petersile to the Department of Medicine!

We’re thrilled to welcome Vaikom Subramanian Mahadevan to Cardiovascular Medicine!

We are pleased to announce that after a national search facilitated by the firm Witt Kieffer, Dr. Vaikom Subramanian Mahadevan, formerly the William W. Parmley Endowed Chair in Cardiology and professor of medicine at the University of California San Francisco, has accepted our offer to become the next chief of Cardiology and co-director of the Heart and Vascular Center of Excellence.

Dr. Mahadevan is a world-renowned interventional cardiologist specializing in adult congenital heart disease. After completing specialized training at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London and at the University of Toronto, Dr. Mahadevan served with distinction on faculty in Manchester, UK, and then UCSF, where he established UCSF's structural heart program and advanced fellowships. Dr. Mahadevan was highlighted by his referents as a highly collaborative leader, gifted clinical trialist, as well as a dedicated physician. We are very excited that Dr. Mahadevan will collaborate closely with Dr. Theo Meyer as clinical chief of Cardiology, Dr. Chinmay Trivedi as Research Director, and Dr. Andres Schanzer (co-director of the Heart and Vascular Center of Excellence) to establish a vibrant team that will lead Cardiovascular Medicine's educational, research, and clinical missions forward at UMass Chan/UMass Memorial Health.

We’re thrilled to welcome Deborah Blazey-Martin, MD, MPH, to General Internal Medicine!

Dr. Blazey-Martin joins us from Tufts Medical Center, where she has served as Chief of Internal Medicine and Adult Primary Care for the last nine years. She has also served as the medical director for Tufts Medical Center LCO, NEQCA since 2021, and for Tufts Medical Center Community Care since 2016. During her time as Chief, she established herself as an accomplished leader, spearheading initiatives that have built models of care to utilize data in innovative ways and enhance performance improvement. She has also strived to lead with compassion and implement strategies to help physicians address burnout and the plethora of challenges that emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic. She has held several academic and educational appointments including the Director of Continuing Medical Education Conference in the Division of Internal Medicine and Adult Primary Care, the Associate Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency Program, and the Director of Resident Education for General Internal Medicine. She was the recipient of the Castle Connelly Exceptional Women in Medicine award, 2017-19, and the Kritzman Primary Care Teaching Award at Tufts Medical Center in 2017. Dr. Blazey-Martin earned her medical degree from the Boston University School of Medicine. She completed her residency in Primary Care at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and her fellowship in Internal Medicine at Harvard University School of Medicine.

Dr. Blazey-Martin will serve as the new Vice Chair for Ambulatory Affairs and Chief of General Internal Medicine. In this role, she will oversee the Division of General Medicine and the Department’s ambulatory strategy and operations. She will support our ambulatory physician leads and will work closely with Medical Center and System leaders in this capacity to provide high-quality ambulatory care, access, and a positive work experience for our ambulatory physicians, advanced practitioners, and clinic staff.

We’re thrilled to welcome Pavani Srimatkandada, MD, ECNU, to Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism!

Dr. Srimatkandada joins us from Reliant Medical Group/Optum Care in Worcester, where she served as a physician in the Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Nutrition Department since 2015. Dr. Srimatkandada earned her MD from New York Medical College in Valhalla, NY, and completed her Internal Medicine residency at Boston University Medical Center. In her new role at UMass, Dr. Srimatkandada will see patients at the Tri-River and University campuses. Please join us in welcoming Dr. Srimatkandada to the Department of Medicine!

We’re thrilled to welcome Ryan Quarles, MD, to Hospital Medicine!

Dr. Quarles joins us from UMass Chan Medical School - Baystate/Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, where he was an assistant professor of medicine since 2020 and served as a hospitalist since 2017. Dr. Quarles earned his MD from Ross University School of Medicine in Dominica and completed his Internal Medicine residency at Baystate Medical Center. In his new role at UMass, Dr. Quarles will cover adult admissions on the inpatient hospitalist service at the University, Memorial, and Marlboro campuses. Please join us in welcoming Dr. Quarles to the Department of Medicine!

We’re thrilled to welcome Elena
Byhoff, MD, MSc, to General Internal Medicine!

Dr. Byhoff joins us from Tufts Medical Center, where she served as an attending physician since 2016. Prior to that, she was an attending physician at the VA in Ann Arbor, Michigan and Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in Philadelphia. Dr. Byhoff earned her MD from the UPENN School of Medicine and completed her Internal Medicine residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. She also holds a MSc in Health Services Research from the University of Michigan. Welcome Dr. Byhoff!
