Welcome from our Chair, David McManus, MD, ScM

It is with pride and enthusiasm that I welcome you to the Department of Medicine at the UMass Chan Medical School and UMass Memorial Health.

The Department of Medicine’s vision is to be the national leader in the delivery of innovative and high-quality patient care, education programs and in transformative basic and clinical research.

Our mission is informed by the following five core values:

  • Putting the Patient at the Center of All We Do
  • Discovery, Innovation, and Scholarship
  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
  • Teamwork
  • Professionalism and Accountability

Our Department has 16 Divisions and includes over 370 active faculty members. We care deeply about each other, our community, and are dogged in our advocacy for our patients. Our world-class faculty are developing innovative approaches for the prevention and treatment of disease through internationally recognized and world-class research programs, including the Programs in Innate Immunity and Digital Medicine. With 80 principal investigators, the Department of Medicine secured over $49 million in funding in FY22. We contribute to a vibrant academic community at UMass Chan, where we rank in the top 30 of NIH-funded academic institutions.

Our clinical partner, UMass Memorial Health, is the largest healthcare system in Central and Western Massachusetts, featuring three acute care hospitals, and a wide array of clinical services ranging the entire continuum of care.

We are proud of our team and welcome you to explore our website. Here you can view more about the Department, our faculty, our research, our clinical partner, and the many educational opportunities we have available.
