March 27, 2019 - Mara Epstein, ScD, assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Geriatric Medicine, is a site principal investigator for the NIH All of Us Program, a historic effort to gather data from one million people or more living in the U.S. to uncover paths toward delivering precision medicine, which is health care tailored to the individual receiving.

February 20, 2019 - Joel Gore, MD, has been named the recipient of the 2019 Heart of Gold Award for cardiovascular professionals by the American Heart Association of Massachusetts. Dr. Gore, professor emeritus of medicine and former chief of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at UMass Chan Medical School, will accept the honor at the Central Massachusetts Heart and Stroke Ball on Saturday, March 2 at Mechanics Hall in Worcester.

January 30, 2019 - David Cave, MD, PhD, professor of medicine, and colleagues from the division of Gastroenterology, as well as the Departments of Quantitative Health Sciences and Emergency Medicine, are among the authors on a new study, published in the Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Journal earlier this month on a new way of managing GI bleeding.

Significant progress has been made in the effort to establish certified public health laboratories, safe blood collection, infection prevention and control practices in Liberia.

October 5, 2018 - Jane Freedman, MD, professor of medicine, division of Cardiovascular Medicine, has been selected as the next Editor-In-Chief of Circulation Research, the premier basic research-focused cardiovascular journal in the world. 

October 4, 2018 - Mayuko Ito Fukunaga, MD, assistant professor of medicine, division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care is an inaugural fellow in the Massachusetts Consortium for Cardiopulmonary Implementation Science Scholars program at UMass Chan Medical School. She will investigate the Implementation of Informed Proactive Patient and Provider-Communication Technology. Dr. Ito Fukunaga aims to help providers promote lung cancer screening discussion during office visits with eligible patients. Improving the accuracy and use of electronic health record data to identify appropriate patients will be key to the effort. Technology will likewise be the means to help patients access information through online patient portals.

This award recognizes outstanding mid-career faculty whose contributions have reached a level of national distinction.

September 14, 2018 - Four DOM Faculty Honored at 2018 Convocation and Investiture Ceremony: 

Jane Freedman, MD, professor of medicine, director of translational research for the UMass Memorial Heart and Vascular Center and director of the High-Throughput Gene Expression and Biomarker Core Lab, was invested into the Edward Budnitz, MD, Professorship in Cardiovascular Medicine.

Jonathan Gerber, MD, chief of the division of Hematology-Oncology, medical director of the UMass Cancer Center and associate professor of medicine, was invested into the Eleanor Eustis Farrington Chair in Cancer Research.

Katherine Fitzgerald, PhD, the Worcester Foundation Chair in Biomedical Sciences, professor of medicine and director of the UMass Chan Program in Innate Immunity, division of Infectious Disease and Immunology, received the Chancellor’s Medal for Distinguished Scholarship.

Theo Meyer, MD, PhD, professor of medicine, division of Cardiovascular Medicine, received the Chancellor’s Medal for Distinguished Clinical Excellence.
