Dr. McManusDavid McManus Appointed as Chancellor of UMass Chan Medical School 

It is with great excitement and deep pride that we announce the appointment of David McManus, MD’02, MSc’12, the Richard M. Haidack Professor in Medicine, chair and professor of medicine, as the next chancellor of UMass Chan Medical School. 

Dr. McManus earned his undergraduate degree from Brown University and his medical degree from UMass Chan in 2002. He completed his internal medicine residency at the University of California, San Francisco, before returning to UMass Chan for fellowships in cardiovascular medicine and clinical cardiac electrophysiology. He later earned a Master of Science in Clinical Investigation from UMass Chan in 2012 and an Executive MBA from MIT’s Sloan School of Management in 2025. 

Since becoming chair of the Department of Medicine in 2020, Dr. McManus has led a department comprising 16 divisions, more than 370 faculty members, and 80 principal investigators, overseeing more than $70 million in annual research funding. As the founding director of the Program in Digital Medicine at UMass Chan, he has secured more than $140 million in NIH funding and authored more than 400 scientific publications. In January, he was recognized by the Boston Business Journal as a 2026 Innovator in Healthcare. 

As a distinguished clinical cardiologist, Dr. McManus is known for delivering innovative, high-quality patient care to Central Massachusetts, collaborating closely with colleagues in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine and across our institution. 

We thank Dr. McManus for his service, dedication, and countless contributions to the Department of Medicine. As chancellor, we are confident that he will continue to guide UMass Chan as a leader in innovation, education, research, health care delivery, and public service.
