Richard Ellison Discusses Recent Measles Outbreak in Worcester Magazine
Over the past few months, there have been more cases of measles across the United States than all the year prior, according to Richard Ellison, MD, professor of medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases and Immunology. In a recent publication in Worcester Magazine, Dr. Ellison discussed the dangers of contagious diseases, such as measles.
“Although it can be prevented by vaccine, there is a concern that we could have a spread in the hospital. One question that came up is that we don't want someone in the hospital with measles. We could potentially expose a large percentage of the population,” explained Dr. Ellison.
Though measles appears to be spreading throughout the US, Dr. Ellison believes that the high vaccination rate in the Worcester region keeps the outbreak risk low.
