Michael Thompson Celebrates Retirement 

Michael Thompson, MD, professor of medicine in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism, retired from UMass on March 31, 2026, after more than three decades caring for patients with diabetes at UMass Memorial.  

Throughout his career, Dr. Thompson led and participated in numerous clinical trials focused on improving diabetes care, including studies evaluating continuous glucose monitoring, hybrid closed-loop insulin delivery systems, therapies to preserve insulin-producing beta cells in type 1 diabetes, and interventions aimed at preventing diabetes-related kidney disease. He additionally served as the Ambulatory Physician Leader at the UMass Memorial Diabetes Center of Excellence. 

Dr. Thompson earned his medical degree from UMass Chan, where he also completed his internal medicine residency. He then completed a fellowship in endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism at Duke University Hospital.
