Date Posted: Tuesday, July 05, 2022In this month’s Chair’s Spotlight, we highlight the work and accomplishments of Stephen B. Erban, MD, MPH, Chief, Section of Clinical Informatics in the recently created Division of Health Systems Science and Associate Professor of Medicine. He is also a member of the Division of General Internal Medicine. Dr. Erban joined the Department of Medicine in 1988.
Dr. Erban has worked on the implementation and optimization of UMass Memorial Health’s information systems for many years. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Clinical Informatics and is currently in the process of developing an ACGME accredited Fellowship in Clinical Informatics.
On his work, Dr. Erban recently noted, “I have always been interested in how we can deliver evidence-based clinical care in more timely and efficient ways. I have also been interested in the best way to harness our patient population to advance knowledge with clinical research. It was clear to me long ago that the electronic health record was going to be the most essential piece of infrastructure to accomplish these goals. Many of my efforts over the past 30 years have focused on deploying and improving electronic records to help accomplish these goals.”
Dr. Erban earned his MD from the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine and completed his internship, residency, and fellowship in General Internal Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He also completed a master’s in public health at UMass Amherst during the early part of his career at UMass. In addition to his service and contributions to UMass, Dr. Erban is a current fellow of the American College of Physicians and a member of the American Medical Informatics Association.
Dr. Erban is highly respected by his patients and colleagues, and we are thankful for his invaluable contributions to the improvement of the electronic health record here at UMMH. His dedication and service to the UMass Chan/UMMH community are greatly appreciated!
