In this month’s special edition of the Chair’s Spotlight, we are proud to introduce our newly appointed Chief Internal Medicine Residents for the upcoming 2026-2027 academic year. Please join us in welcoming Anthony Bilotta, MD, PhD, Sam Fox, MD, Cindy Le, MD, Ellen Murchie, MD, and Gamble Morrison, MD. We recently had the opportunity to connect with the incoming chiefs to learn more about their backgrounds and their goals for the year ahead.
Tell us a little about yourself. Where did you attend medical school, and what brought you to UMass Chan?
I grew up in Leominster, MA, before heading to Vanderbilt University, where I studied Molecular and Cellular Biology. An early interest in inflammatory bowel disease led me to the John Sealy School of Medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch for my MD/PhD, where my doctoral work explored how fermentation products of dietary fiber influence gut inflammation. I then came to UMass Chan for residency, drawn by the sense of community, the culture of resident autonomy, and the strength and breadth of its clinical training.
What are you most looking forward to during your year as chief resident?
This year, I am honored to serve as one of the chief residents while also applying for a gastroenterology fellowship. As chief, I am especially looking forward to focusing on medical education, particularly improving how our residents are prepared for rapid responses and codes. I am also excited to have time to dive further into my research on how dietary fiber affects outcomes in inflammatory bowel disease.
What goals do you hope to accomplish over the coming year, both personally and professionally?
Outside of medicine, I am a husband and proud father of two girls. One of my personal goals this year is to spend more time with family and to travel together. My free time is often spent with family and friends by the pool or fire, landscaping, or woodworking.
Tell us a little about yourself. Where did you attend medical school, and what brought you to UMass Chan?
I grew up in Marblehead, went to UMass Amherst, and then came to UMass Chan for medical school. I stayed for residency because of the people, the supportive culture, and the chance to keep learning in a place that already felt like home.
What are you most looking forward to during your year as chief resident?
I’m most looking forward to working closely with the residents and helping make the year as supportive, engaging, and educational as possible. I especially enjoy teaching and mentoring, and I’m excited to continue building on that. Whether it’s helping medical students realize that Internal Medicine is the best specialty or helping residents figure out their next steps and what they want to do with their careers, I look forward to being a resource and advocate for them.
What goals do you hope to accomplish over the coming year, both personally and professionally?
Professionally, I hope to grow as an educator and leader, improve our teaching conferences, and continue my work in cardiology and medical education. Personally, I hope to maximize time with my family and enjoy the year with my wife and our one-year-old son, Charlie.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Outside of work, I enjoy cooking and trying new foods, exercising, skiing, reading, getting out on the ocean any way I can, and spending time with my family. I am looking forward to learning as much as possible from everyone in this new role!
Tell us a little about yourself. Where did you attend medical school, and what brought you to UMass Chan?
I was born and raised in the heart of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, AKA, Worcester. I attended UMass Amherst, where I majored in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology while also earning a minor in Sociology and a certificate in Asian American Studies. After graduation, I spent a gap year at Boston Children's Hospital before returning home to attend UMass Chan Medical School. During medical school, I fell in love with internal medicine and knew I wanted to continue my training at UMass Chan. My husband, Thomas, and I couple matched here, and it was our top choice because of the incredible residents, faculty, and staff, as well as the opportunity to care for a diverse and medically complex patient population. The supportive culture and outstanding clinical training have made UMass Chan an exceptional place to learn, grow, and build the foundation for our future careers!
What are you most looking forward to during your year as chief resident?
I am looking forward to continuing to work closely with residents and medical students while further developing my skills in medical education. I have been at UMass for quite some time and am excited to support the development and success of those around me.
What goals do you hope to accomplish over the coming year, both personally and professionally?
My goals this year are to further develop my leadership skills and gain a deeper understanding of the administrative side of medicine. I also hope to continue refining my abilities as a medical educator by mentoring residents and medical students.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
My husband and I both attended high school here in Worcester, where we first met, so it feels especially meaningful to spend an extra year in our hometown. He will also be serving as Chief Resident in Pediatrics, and we are both excited for the opportunity to grow in these leadership roles while giving back to the community that helped shape us. Professionally, I have a strong interest in nephrology and geriatrics, and I will be applying for a nephrology fellowship this year!
Tell us a little about yourself. Where did you attend medical school, and what brought you to UMass Chan?
I was born in Worcester and grew up in Westminster, MA, near Mt. Wachusett. I attended Saint Michael’s College in Vermont and afterward worked as a research technician at Massachusetts General Hospital for several years. I initially planned to pursue a PhD but began exploring a career in medicine after realizing I wanted to have a more direct impact on patient care. This led me to Loyola Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago before I ultimately returned to Massachusetts for my internal medicine residency. Outside of medicine, I enjoy reading, baking, and spending time with my fiancé, Alice, and our dog, Birdie.
What are you most looking forward to during your year as chief resident?
I am excited to have dedicated time to teach residents and medical students. It’s an honor to serve as chief resident, and I’m looking forward to giving back to a program that has given me so much.
What goals do you hope to accomplish over the coming year, both personally and professionally?
This year, I hope to strengthen my leadership skills, help improve our residents’ experience, and learn how to integrate AI into medical teaching.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
After residency, I hope to pursue a career in Infectious Disease.
Tell us a little about yourself. Where did you attend medical school, and what brought you to UMass Chan?
I'm originally from Portsmouth, NH, and attended the University of New Hampshire for undergrad. I later attended the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine after spending several gap years as a clinical research coordinator at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. I came to UMass because I was looking for a program with outstanding clinical training and a collaborative culture, and having watched my wife train here, I knew it was a place where residents genuinely supported one another. Three years later, I can honestly say that the reputation was well deserved.
What are you most looking forward to during your year as chief resident?
I'm looking forward to helping residents navigate the challenges of training while continuing to build on the culture of teaching that makes UMass special. Some of my favorite experiences as a resident included working through difficult cases in morning report or helping someone have that "aha" moment when a concept finally clicked. I'm excited to spend a year creating more of those opportunities in a formal role, while also serving as an advocate for our residents.
What goals do you hope to accomplish over the coming year, both personally and professionally?
Professionally, I hope to leave behind both tangible educational resources as well as a general approach to teaching and mentorship that continues to benefit residents after my chief year ends. Personally, as a new father, I'm looking forward to spending more time with my wife and our newborn son while making the most of this opportunity to serve a program that has given me so much.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
I'm passionate about cardiovascular medicine and am currently applying to cardiology fellowships. Outside of medicine, I enjoy hiking, skiing, exploring the food and brewery scene in Worcester and the surrounding area, cheering on the Patriots, and relaxing with my family while enjoying a good book or movie.
