Admission Requirements
All US Citizens and those holding permanent resident status within the United States should apply to the MD/PhD program through the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS), indicating their interest in the UMass Chan Medical School's combined degree program. Massachusetts’s residency is not required for application to the MD/PhD program.
Upon receipt of the AMCAS application, a UMMS supplemental application form will be forwarded to each applicant related to the MD/PhD program. There is no fee for completing the secondary application for MD/PhD applicants. The only standardized testing required is the MCAT.
Applications will be screened by the MD/PhD Admissions Committee. Factors considered in the committee's review include the following:
- Prior academic performance
- Evidence of passion and commitment to a career in biomedical science. This includes examples of activities in which curiosity and creativity are required.
- Evidence of strength of character and resolve. This includes examples of successfully overcoming adversity in a variety of contexts; academic, personal, or experiential.
- Letters of recommendation that attest to the points above
- Evidence of motivation and preparedness for medicine; attributes and values deemed necessary for physicians, including: honesty; altruism; compassion; flexibility; maturity; intellectual curiosity; self-awareness; ability for self-directed learning; ability to work as a member of a team

- AP credit for required coursework will be considered but the application is strengthened by completion of all required courses during the undergraduate or post-baccalaureate process.
- There is no expiration date for required coursework. It is strongly recommended that all required coursework be completed within six years of applying to UMass Chan. Required courses with a significantly longer gap will weaken the application.
