April Resident Spotlight: Elizabeth Douglas, DO, MPH

In this month’s Resident Spotlight, we highlight Elizabeth Douglas, DO, MPH, a third-year Internal Medicine Resident on the Primary Care Track. Here, Dr. Douglas describes her clinical and research interests, what makes UMass Chan a great place for residency, and her favorite things to do in the Worcester area.

Hometown?

New Braunfels, TX. I've lived all over Texas for 20+ years but New Braunfels will always be home.

What are your clinical and research interests?
I'm working on a few quality improvement projects about improving care for women with cardiovascular disease and preventing cardiovascular and metabolic disease in women in the primary care setting, specifically with women diagnosed with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. I also take a special interest in women's health and weight loss medicine in primary care. I have a master’s degree in public health, so I do have a clinical interest in access to care, public health, health literacy, and decreasing hospital readmissions.

Are you involved in any other groups or activities at UMass that you’d like to highlight?

  • Run Club - I don't run daily, but I will run socially.

  • Primary Care Track - Extra training within the internal medicine program with certain procedures and certain subspecialties within primary care.

  • Informal Gardening Support Group - Some other residents and I swap lawn and garden tips, seeds, plants, etc.

  • Readmissions Committee - Meets once a month to track, analyze, and reduce hospital readmissions.

What makes UMass a great place for your residency?
I wake up in the morning and look forward to going into work alongside the best admin, residents, fellows, and mentors. I would pick UMass again in a heartbeat just for them, not to mention the variety of cases we get here and patient diversity.

Favorite hobbies?
Lifting weights, gardening, and playing outside with my dogs and daughter.

Favorite thing to do in Worcester/Worcester area?
Attending Worcester Red Sox games, hiking, apple picking, and cross-country skiing.
