Neil Marya, MDPilot Study Demonstrates Efficacy of AI Tool Designed to Assist in Evaluation of Bile Duct Specimens

Investigators from UMass Chan Medical School and Mayo Clinic previously developed an artificial intelligence (AI) tool to assist cytologists in the evaluation of pancreatobiliary lesions.

In a new pilot study led by Neil Marya, MD, assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology and a director of the Program in Digital Medicine, published in Cancer Cytopathology, the team further explored the AI tool’s efficacy when using it with a newly developed web-based application. Cytologists reviewed specimens with and without the tool and data were compared. Results revealed that the AI application allowed cytologists to perform a rapid review of specimens while maintaining accuracy.
