October Postdoctoral Spotlight: Romana Rashid, PhD

This month, we are excited to feature Romana Rashid, PhD, as our Postdoc Spotlight! Dr. Rashid is a postdoc in the labs of Drs. Douglas Golenbock and Kate Fitzgerald.

I hail from the northernmost geographical region of the Indian subcontinent, the enchanting land of Kashmir, nestled between the majestic Great Himalayas and the Pir Panjal Mountain Range.

What is your research focus?
My primary research focus lies in unraveling the intricacies of innate immune activation in Malaria.

Why did you choose UMass for your postdoctoral studies?
My academic journey brought me here in 2021 after a year as a postdoctoral researcher at St. Jude. My aspiration was to be part of an exceptional immunology lab and institution that fostered personal and professional growth while offering opportunities to engage with diverse communities. It was also influenced by my husband's high regard for UMass, an institution he considered his special place for learning, in addition to being the nation's premier primary care provider. Positive reviews from him, combined with my own research interests, led me to this path, and I am delighted to be a part of this institution, contributing to the betterment of humanity.

Where is your favorite place to travel for vacation and why?
When it comes to leisure, my desire is to explore the world, but my heart is set on Dubai as my dream vacation destination. With its grandeur, featuring one of the world's largest shopping malls (perfect for my shopping indulgence), the world's tallest tower, and one of the largest man-made marinas, Dubai's allure is undeniable.

What is your favorite game or sport to watch and play?
While cricket is my long-standing passion, I've recently found a growing interest in soccer, despite its lesser popularity in the United States. My sporting interests keep evolving, and I'm excited to explore new horizons.
