What is BioRender?

BioRender is a web-based program that helps you create scientific figures up to 50x faster than traditional tools. The tool combines a library of over 30,000 scientifically accurate, expert-validated life science icons and templates with intuitive drag-and-drop functionality. Create publication-quality figures in minutes - no drawing skills required!

Many of you may already be using the FREE version of BioRender, or perhaps you are using a paid version and want to consider a move to the UMMS Site License.  Here are the details on how you can take advantage of this opportunity now.

To access your FREE BioRender Premium account at the University of Massachusettsclick here! Or contact BioRender's Customer Support at

Starting in FY’22 (7/1/2021)

So, here’s what happens at the next renewal which is also in sync with our University Fiscal Calendar Year (7/1-6/31).

UMMS IT Billing will be charging back for the licenses beginning with the start of FY’22. We won’t know the exact cost of the license until we understand how many labs will be committing to paying for licenses in FY’22. However, based on our estimated forecasts we expect that the cost of the licenses will be roughly $170-$200 per license/ per year and possibly less

If you don’t want to pay for BioRender through the UMMS site license, you can revert back to the FREE version, but you would also revert back to the limitations imposed by that version. Or, you could consider purchasing a license on your own. Comparatively, the UMMS site license would still be cheaper than the Single User or Lab license packages and you’d get the  full breadth of features & functionality through the site license.

Here are just some of those Features, all of which you can see in their pricing.

  • Full access to all the features and functionality
  • Full Access to 20,000+ icons among 30+ life science fields
  • On-demand live customer support
  • Request Custom icons and with a 6-10 day turnaround time
  • Team / lab shared files and collaboration
  • Unlimited file storage and file management
  • Permission for educational use and publishing
  • Monthly webinar access

In order to be included in the FY’22 site license you must commit to purchasing a license(s) by no later than March 31, 2021. This date is very important because a snapshot of our user volume beginning on this date will determine the costs for FY’22. This means that UMMS IT will need to make a license commitment for the renewal to BioRender based on the volumes starting April 1st

You don’t need to commit now, in fact you can use the site license for free from now until the end of March to test it out and help you make your decision. That includes the two training sessions that were noted earlier in this memo

In order to complete your commitment, by March 31st we will need your Speedtype number that you want us to charge at renewal in July 2021, and the name of your financial approver in order to reserve your licenses.

Thank you for your attention and if you have any questions, please contact Byron Deane at
