Medical Scientist Training Program Promissory Note and Special Program Fee Details
Students entering the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) are required to sign a promissory note for a Special Program Fee for the first two years of enrollment in the Medical School. Payment of this fee is deferred while the student remains actively enrolled in the MSTP. Upon successful completion of all requirements for both the MD and PhD degrees, the repayment obligation is forgiven in full.
If a student withdraws from the MSTP or does not complete the PhD portion of the program, the deferred Special Program Fee becomes subject to repayment under the terms of the promissory note.
The Special Program Fee for the 2026-2027 academic year is shown below for reference:
- Massachusetts residents - $44,292 for the academic year
- Non-Massachusetts residents - $76,164 for the academic year
Students who withdraw from the MSTP before completing the PhD requirements may continue in the MD curriculum. In that circumstance, future semesters will be charged at the medical school tuition rate associated with the residency classification indicated in the student's acceptance letter. The student will no longer receive the Special Program Fee or MSTP stipend support. Repayment of any previously deferred Special Program Fees will remain deferred until the student completes the MD degree, at which time the terms of the promissory note will take effect.
