Neurocritical Care

Neurocritical CareOur board-certified neurocritical care neurologists are comprised of physician-scientists seeking to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying muscular dystrophy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and other neuromuscular disorders by investigating skeletal muscle development and focusing on human muscle biology. By collaborating with neurology and gene intensivists comprehensive patient care and clinical research trials are possible through our neurocritical care unit.

UMASS NeuroICU at UmassMemorial Medical Center

UMassMemorial Health Care (UMMHC) is the clinical partner of UMass Chan and located directly on the UMass Chan campus in Worcester. UMMHC is the largest health care system and the only level 1 trauma center in Central MA. UMMHC has a trauma area encompassing a 63-mile radius with its referral region extending to the borders of New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. UMMHC has an effective catchment area of nearly 1 million individuals. UMMHC’s neuroICU is the only specialized neuro-trauma intensive care unit (neuroICU) in MA. Uniquely at UMMHC, all patients with neurotrauma, including poly-traumas, are admitted to the neuroICU attending’s care. The ICU operates under the “closed-ICU model” in which intensivists provide triage and care and develop a very close relationship with the patient families. It is a state-of-the-art 16-bed ICU opened in 2006 providing multimodality monitoring and a portable head CT. Four board-certified neurology-trained neurointensivists and a surgical trauma intensivist attend in UMMHC’s neuroICU.
