Our Current Type 1 Diabetes Research Includes

Novel Mouse Avatars for Type 1 Diabetes
Reconstructing human type 1 diabetes (T1D) in our novel immunodeficient mouse models using cells derived from T1D patients. These tools provide better insight into how people might react to certain factors.
Development and Validation of Novel Mouse Models for Human Stem Cell Therapy
Determining the ability of human stem cells to generate functional differentiated human cells and tissues that mitigate disease in new models of immunodeficient mice.
Specialized Models to Determine the Role of Costimulation Pathway Reagents in Human Immune Cells In Vivo
Assessing the role(s) of human T cell costimulation pathway reagents in our humanized mouse models.
From New Models to Novel Therapeutics
Dr. Brehm is co-director with Dale Greiner, PhD, of a pre-clinical Humanized Mouse Core to advance the development & use of human-specific disease models at UMass Chan Medical School. The Core promotes interactions with clinicians and hospitals, obtains access to patient data & samples, and conducts comprehensive model assessment necessary for the generation of models engrafted with human tumors and immune systems for preclinical testing, in collaboration with The Jackson Laboratory Precision Genetics Center.
