UMass Chan Medical School offers eligible non-union and SHARE employees, their spouses and dependent children, the choice between two dental insurance options through Cigna: the Basic Plan (UMass Chan pays the entire cost) or the Plus Plan (UMass Chan shares the cost with the employee).

Enrollment Information

You must enroll as a new hire within your first 21 calendar days of employment; otherwise, you may enroll during the Open Enrollment period that occurs each April/May with coverage effective July 1. Note: Certain family status changes may enable you to enroll other than as a new hire or during open enrollment. Please refer to the Life Events tab in the top navigation bar for more information.

When does coverage begin?

*Effective July 1, 2024, coverage begins on the first day of the month following your date of hire. If your day of hire falls on the first of the month, then your benefit begins that same day.

Important Notes:

  • If you are in the AFSCME, MNA, NAGE or NEPBA union, you receive your dental insurance through the union. Please contact the union for more information.
  • Your Member ID with Cigna Dental is your UMass Employee ID preceded by a “0” (zero). We do not feed Social Security numbers to Cigna. Cigna has a pseudo SSN in their system that is assigned to you.
