Autism Evaluation Services

FaCES Autism Evaluation Program

The FaCES program now has the capacity to offer diagnostic autism evaluations at the UMass Memorial Children’s Medical Center for children and adolescents in child-welfare custody with a concern for autism. This is a collaboration of the Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics division and the FaCES Clinic.

If you would like to refer a patient to the program – fax or email the FaCES referral form to the FaCES program. You will be contacted by our team members to find out more about the child, and to schedule the evaluation which will include:

  • A telephone or zoom intake meeting.  This will take about an hour and can be with a combination of the DCF case worker, biologic parent, and foster family. Ideally, we need information from those who know the child and can provide information on developmental history, current functioning and concerns.
  • An in-person evaluation of the child. This will be scheduled on a Tuesday or Thursday and will take approximately 2-4 hours.  It will include more questions about development and direct observation and testing of the child.
  • A feedback session.  This is when we provide the results of the testing, guidance about next steps and, if appropriate, documentation needed to access autism specific services. We welcome participation from all caregivers and individuals that support the child.

Children do not need to be patients of the FaCES clinic to qualify but do need to be in foster placement.

To make a referral – complete a referral form, specifically answering questions in the autism program section.  Fax or email request and referral once all completed.
