Our cogeneration system provides on-site, highly reliable power, reducing dependence on the grid and acting as a frontline defense before backup generators even kick in.
During grid outages or extreme weather events, CHP systems can operate self-sustained, keeping critical research and hospital functions running seamlessly.
Reliable energy infrastructure is also critical to medical research and education. Research labs depend on uninterrupted power for sensitive samples, clinical trials, and specialized equipment, where even brief outages can be damaging. Continuous energy also supports classrooms, simulation labs, and digital learning environments that train future healthcare professionals & leaders.

Up to 8–10% of electricity is lost during transmission over long distances, but our CHP system cuts that loss by generating power here on campus.

UMass Chan Medical School was been awarded $5.6 million from National Grid—the largest incentive of its kind ever given by the company in Massachusetts at that time—for an energy-efficient 14,000-square-foot expansion of its power plant. The expansion was launched to support the 500,000-square-foot Albert Sherman Center research and education facility.
